NHI unveils “Ang Bayan ng Solsona” historical marker SOLSONA, ILOCOS NORTE - The National Historical Institute (NHI) will unveil the historical marker “Ang Bayan ng Solsona” in Solsona, Ilocos Norte on January 29, 2010 at 8:00 a.m., in line with its centennial anniversary of its reconstitution on January 1, 2010. Solsona was first known Santiago. However, Solsona replaced Santiago in the list of Ilocos Norte towns for the year 1856. It was first organized as a barangay with its own cabeza de barangay in 1788. During World War II, it was one of the sites of successful ambush conducted by the Ablan-Madamba guerilla group against the Japanese. As an ecclesiastical unit Solsona was first a visita of Piddig parish. By 1884, it had its own priest but its official status was still that of a visita. Solsona was annexed to the Municipality of Dingras in 1903 through Public Act No. 946, which reduced the15 towns of Ilocos Norte to ten. It regained its municipal independence in 1910, pursuant to Executive Order No. 135 issued by the Governor General William Cameron Forbes on December 2, 1909. The unveiling of the historical marker will be led by NHI Deputy Executive Director Emelita V. Almosara, CESO IV and Mayor Joseph De Lara. The historical marker shall be officially turned-over to the Municipal Government of Solsona. Ms. Carminda Arevalo, Officer-in-Charge of the NHI Research, Publications and Heraldry Division and vice-Mayor Jonathan de Lara will sign as witnesses in the Certificate of Transfer of the historical marker. The NHI is a national government agency mandated to promote and preserve Philippine history and heritage through research, information dissemination, conservation, including the marking of historic sites and structures, and the maintenance and administration of national shrines, monuments and landmarks.
