“The ideal university must live a free life, cooperating with, yet financially independent of, the vital political and economic forces of the country; sympathetic toward national purposes and ideals, yet free from the passions and inconsistencies of contemporary politics.”

65th Anniversary of the Battle for Manila

Manila –The 65th Anniversary of the Battle for Manila will be commemorated on February 3, 2010, 8:00 a.m. at the Freedom Triangle, Manila City Hall, Taft Avenue cor A. Villegas St. (formerly Arroceros).

Flag-raising and wreath-laying rites will be led by Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim, Ambassadors and representatives from the Embassies of the United States of America, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, People’s Republic of China, Australia and Mexico.

They will be joined by the officials from the Memorare Manila 1945, National Historical Institute, Manila Historical and Heritage Commission and other government and private organizations.

Keynote speaker for this year’s observance is Mr. Manuel Quezon III.

In this warfare, Gen. Douglas Mc Arthur restored the seat of the Commonwealth Government – Manila, the capital of the Philippines, to President Sergio Osmeña, Sr.  The aftermath of the war, which began on February 3 and ended on March 3, 1945, brought destruction in the city of Manila and innocent lives lost.  The war victims who perished in this battle will always remind us to treasure peace and freedom.

The NHI is a national government agency mandated to promote and preserve Philippine historical heritage through research, information dissemination, conservation, including the marking of historic sites and structures, and the maintenance and administration of national shrines and landmarks.
